Took some much needed time for myself to make a pair of marking knives. The left is brass and ebony (thanks @exoticwoodsinc impulse-buy-bin); the right is verawood and ebony. The ebony has some beautiful light streaks running through it. The verawood has yet to oxidize to its beautiful jade green. I'm liking the brass accent, and plan on raiding my exotic wood offcut bin to make some more knives. I hope you are keeping safe and healthy during these trying times. I've been very fortunate in so many aspects. I have a number of built-in cabinetry projects which had to be put on hold, but then a series of freestanding furniture commissions cropped up to fill in that gap. Hello, long time no see. About 14 years ago, I built two sets of leaning shelves from plans in Popular Woodworking. One set was finished, and eventually made its way to a friend's home. The other set remained unfinished, and moved from basement to basement. About few months ago I was chatting with said friend, and they told me that those shelves were their favorite piece of furniture. I mentioned that I had another set, and they jumped on the opportunity to have them. I've picked away at finishing them over the past month, and today is curb-side, physically distanced delivery day. Seeing them come together for the first time in a decade reminds me of what a simple, yet beautiful design Chris Schwarz (@lostartpress) came up with for them. Ebonized red oak and birch plywood, finished in a flat waterbourne polyurethane.

Small bench/coffee table. Figured poplar crotch with walnut feet. Picked the piece of wood up off the side of the road because I liked the grey exterior. I had no idea about the figure within. My original plan had been to partially hollow it out from the top and inset a drawer. So glad I didn't. #poplarcrotch #poplar #bench #coffeetable #customfurniture

Foot detail - keeping the top of what is essentially 2/3 of a log flat, meant some different sized feet. A while back I posted about using a router sled to carve the channels for the feet. #walnut #walnutfeet #poplarcrotch #poplarbench #bench

I still can't believe the figure in this piece. No dye, just clearcoat, polished by hand with pumice stone. The grey weathered sides have not had any treatment, other than what Mother Nature did. #poplarcrotch #poplarcrotchbench #poplar

How I attached the legs to the bench. Yup, could have used wedged through tenons, but some 4" GRK lag screws seemed more convenient. Working with pine got me thinking about my first woodworking projects in public school. Pine was inexpensive, so that's what we got to butcher. I still have a number of those projects - butt joined, screwed and glued boxes. Even the small "pee pee" stool my father made so that I could reach the toilet is solid after 40 some odd years of abuse. So, I have no issue with attaching the legs using lag bolts. And hiding them under square caps. Which look like through tenons. #bench #custombench #customfurniture #pinebench

If I had known how many facets and compound angles this bench would require, I probably would have simplified the design. Then again, maybe not. #bench #pine #custombench #pinebench

My very first pen went to my daughter, @isla_isamazing, for her birthday. Happy birthday, Isla! The entire time I was shaping it, I was looking at my disassembled lathe, thinking of how much easier it would be to make on a lathe. 🤦‍♂️ Verawood, with gun-metal hardware. The second picture is of the freshly made pen, showing the caramel colour of freshly cut verawood. The first picture is after a couple of days sunbathing.
